Pallet formats and terms

Size matters: Different pallet formats and common terms explained

Plastic pallets are versatile transport solutions available in a variety of formats to meet different needs. Each pallet format has specific advantages and uses that enable the efficient and safe movement of goods. In this article, we introduce you to the most common pallet formats and explain where they are typically used.

Eighth-size pallets

The eighth-size pallet is the smallest in the range, measuring 300 mm x 400 mm, and is ideal for displaying smaller products or handling small transport quantities.

Areas of application:

  • Retail: Perfect for displaying small containers or promoting small products.
  • Transporting small quantities: Ideal for transporting small or delicate goods that need to be handled efficiently and in a space-saving manner. See for yourself how our FIDUS light 403 lives up to its name and weighs just 1 kg.

Quarter pallet

With dimensions of 400 mm x 600 mm, the  quarter pallet  is another compact format that is particularly used in display and for sales promotion and presentation of products and goods.

Areas of application:

  • Product presentation: Often used in retail spaces and as advertising displays because they showcase products well while remaining easy to handle. Our FIDUS light 604 is particularly suitable for this purpose.
  • Smaller truck or cargo transport: Its manageable size makes it suitable for smaller transports and optimizing storage space.

Half pallet

The  plastic half pallet  measures 600 mm x 800 mm and is a smaller version of the Euro pallet. It is particularly suitable for smaller packages or for use in confined spaces.

Areas of application:

  • Retail and shelving: Often used for smaller packages placed on shelves in supermarkets or warehouses.
  • Partial loads and smaller transports: Ideal when smaller transport volumes need to be organized efficiently. The FIDUS light 806 9F&nbsp is a competent and robust all-rounder – stackable and easy to handle.

Euro pallet

The Euro format  is probably the best-known and most widely used pallet format. With dimensions of 1200 mm x 800 mm, it corresponds to the classic Euro pallet, which is used in many areas of international trade and transport. As the name suggests, it is used primarily in Europe.

Areas of application:

  • Transport of goods throughout Europe: Due to their standardized dimensions, Euro pallets are ideal for cross-border transport.
  • Storage of goods: Due to their standard size, Euro pallets are widely used in many warehouses and distribution centers.
  • Easy stacking and handling: Common machines and shelving systems are designed for the Euro format. The FIDUS ultralight 1208  impresses with its low dead weight of just 4.6 kg and a static load limit of up to 2500 kg.

Industrial pallet

Industrial pallets  are larger than Euro pallets and have a standard size of 1200 mm x 1000 mm. They are often mistaken for Euro pallets, but differ slightly in size. They are exportable worldwide (IPPC compliant).

Areas of application:

  • Heavy-duty: Industrial pallets are generally more robust and can support higher loads, which is why they are often used for heavy goods and industrial applications..
  • Transport of large goods: Industrial pallets are the ideal choice for bulky products that cannot be transported in a traditional Euro pallet.
  • Industry: As the name suggests, industrial-sized pallets are a popular choice for industrial companies, especially in machine-controlled production facilities with automated conveyor systems.

Chemical pallets

Chemical pallets are specially designed for the transport of chemicals or other hazardous materials. They often have a reinforced structure and are generally larger than standard pallets to ensure safety during transport.

Areas of application:

  • Transport of chemicals and hazardous materials: These pallets are often equipped with special safety features, such as a reinforced construction, to ensure the safe transport of chemical products.
  • High-bay warehouses: Chemical pallets are suitable for use in high-bay warehouses and hazardous areas due to their higher load-bearing capacity.

Container pallets

Container pallets are specially designed load carriers that make optimal use of the cargo space in ISO containers. With their square dimensions of 1140 x 1140 mm, they enable efficient loading, reduce empty space, and thus lower transport costs. Thanks to their robust construction, they are ideal for international shipping and ensure the safe transport of your goods over long distances. They are often characterized by the fact that they can be picked up from four sides, making them so-called 4-way pallets.

Areas of application:

  • Sea freight and container transport: Container pallets are frequently used in sea freight because they fit perfectly into the container sizes and facilitate loading and unloading.
  • Large warehouses and logistics centers: They are also suitable for efficient use in large logistics centers and high-bay warehouses.

Display pallets

The display pallet is specially designed for presenting products in retail stores or at trade fairs. With its compact dimensions and sturdy construction, it is ideal for product presentation and rapid sales. Display pallets are typically quarter and half pallets, i.e., they have a format of 400x600 mm and 600x800 mm, respectively.

Areas of application:

  • Retail: Display pallets are ideal for displaying products at points of sale and offering them for immediate sale.
  • Promotions and trade fairs: Particularly useful for promotions and events where products need to be presented quickly and effectively.
