Project description
Problem definition:
In March 2005, a cliff collapse took place on the western edge of the municipality of Lohme on the island of Rügen, causing more than 100,000 m³ of soil to slide away. Hydrogeological investigations up to 2008 revealed that large quantities of groundwater formed in the low-permeability soil layers, which then led to the failure of the slope’s stability in the front slope areas.
Solution and implementation:
From 2009 to 2010, a slope drainage system was planned and built with the support and funding of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Horizontal slope drains up to 56 m long were used to lower the groundwater level by up to 4.5 meters in order to increase the stability of the entire slope. The PURUS ECORASTER System E50 for greenable soil and surface reinforcement was used as an accompanying measure for the slope reinforcement. As an additional stabilization and until sustainable rooting of the vegetation (greening) is achieved, the system was secured with suitable soil nails (specification 1 piece/m²) up to 1 metre in length.
