Fire access areas in a residential complex in Moscow – Durable and plantable access roads with ECORASTER
In a modern residential complex in Moscow, fire access routes and traffic areas were constructed using the ECORASTER grid paving system. The goal of the project was to create a space that meets the high standards required for fire access areas while seamlessly blending into the residential surroundings.
Visually integrated surface solution
The areas were designed that, from the outside, they are virtually indistinguishable from a traditional green space, yet they provide the necessary load-bearing capacity for fire trucks. The use of ECORASTER creates a stable, drivable surface that performs reliably even under the weight of emergency vehicles.
A key aspect of the project was the ability to landscape the area: The grid structure allows grass to grow, enabling the fire access lanes to blend seamlessly into the residential complex’s outdoor spaces. This creates multifunctional areas that serve as green spaces in everyday life and as fully functional fire access lanes in an emergency.
Numerous benefits for fire department areas
- High load-bearing capacity: The surface is designed for heavy emergency vehicles and meets the requirements for fire department access roads.
- Permeability: Rainwater and firefighting water can seep directly into the ground, thereby reducing surface runoff.
- Natural look: Thanks to the landscaping, the area blends seamlessly into the residential complex.
- Multifunctional use: A combination of green space and technical infrastructure for emergencies.
- Low-maintenance and durable: Long-lasting use without traditional sealing.
The project in Moscow demonstrates how functional requirements for fire department access areas can be combined with design and environmental considerations. The use of ECORASTER creates a durable, permeable surface that can be landscaped; while it is barely noticeable in everyday use, it provides the full functionality of a fire department access road in an emergency.
