Project description

ECORASTER ground stabilization for an open barn – Mud-free main walking areas covering 12,000 m²

ECORASTER ground reinforcement for an open-air stable. In this large-scale open-air stable project, an approximately 12,000 m² equestrian facility was constructed on a river floodplain to be permanently stable and mud-free. The particular challenge was that, due to the natural soil and frequent use, conventional surfaces tended to quickly turn into mud and become uneven. The installation of the ECORASTER grid system (TE50) effectively addressed this challenge—the area is now permanently usable, accessible, and functional regardless of weather conditions.

Project Approach and Timeline

In 2016, the uneven alluvial area was first leveled with a layer of gravel to create a stable foundation. The ECORASTER TE50 system was then installed over a large area. This sturdy floor grating element is characterized by its thick walls and high load-bearing capacity, making it particularly suitable for heavy-duty use in equestrian facilities and open-stall areas, where horse traffic and weather conditions require a durable floor surface. The grating was then filled with gravel and, in some areas, additionally covered with sand to create a comfortable, slip-resistant surface where needed.

Today, the area provides horses with an ideal space for exercise and movement without mud or slush forming in rainy or damp conditions—a key advantage over unpaved surfaces. The combination of a sturdy grid structure and a water-permeable surface ensures that rainwater quickly seeps into the ground rather than pooling on the surface.

The use of the permeable ECORASTER system has created a durable, low-maintenance flooring solution that meets the demands of an open barn with heavy horse traffic. The robust grid structure ensures that muddy areas are permanently eliminated, even under intensive use and varying weather conditions, significantly improving both animal welfare and operator comfort.

Now the horses at the riding facility have excellent opportunities to exercise without mud.
