Project description
ECORASTER Sidewalk for a residential complex in Belgium – permeable pathway design for dustainable outdoor spaces
ECORASTER walkway for a residential complex in Belgium. In the spring of 2017, an approximately 1,100 m² walkway was constructed at the Merksplas residential complex using the permeable ECORASTER E50 ground reinforcement to create a permanently stable, visually appealing, and functional outdoor pathway. The paths were specifically constructed using the E50 system because this paving grid, thanks to its robust construction, high load-bearing capacity, and universal applicability, is ideal for outdoor traffic and pedestrian areas.
For the design of the paths, ECORASTER E50 was combined with a fill of light-colored gravel-sand mix. This fill not only creates a water-permeable surface that allows water to drain away, but also allows the path’s course to be naturally discernible without being visually intrusive. In some areas, additional vegetation was added to achieve a harmonious integration into the surrounding residential landscape.
The result is a durable, permeable sidewalk that reliably accommodates daily pedestrian traffic in the residential complex while supporting the natural water cycle. The open structure of the ECORASTER system, combined with the gravel-sand surface, reduces surface runoff, prevents puddles from forming, and minimizes maintenance requirements—all without the use of chemical or sealing treatments.
This solution not only ensures that the sidewalk is structurally sound and weather-resistant, but also blends aesthetically into the outdoor space by creating clear pathways that are visible yet unobtrusive.
