Project description

Indoor riding arena flooring with ECORASTER – A slip-resistant, durable all-purpose solution for concrete

Creation of an indoor all-purpose riding arena floor. In this reference project, an existing concrete riding arena with an area of approximately 200 m² was converted into a functional, all-weather riding surface within a few days—using the ECORASTER grid system, which acts as a separation and stabilization layer between the concrete subbase and the upper surface layers.

Procedure and Process

The existing arena consisted of smooth industrial concrete, which was too hard and slippery for horses and riders and was not suitable as a load-bearing base for sand or riding surfaces. The unique challenge of this project was therefore to optimize the floor within a tight construction schedule while preserving the existing arena structure. The targeted use of ECORASTER created a safe, dimensionally stable subbase that remains reliable and functional over the long term, even under sudden movements or heavy loads—such as those caused by horses, trailers, or maintenance equipment. After the ECORASTER elements were installed, the surface was first filled with gravel and compacted, before being covered with a layer of sand. The result is a non-slip, low-maintenance indoor riding arena surface that offers properties optimized for both training and recreational activities.

Features and benefits of ECORASTER for indoor riding arenas

Using ECORASTER as a separating layer between the concrete and the sand prevents the expensive surface layer from mixing with the subgrade—a fundamental requirement for a uniform, long-lasting riding surface. At the same time, the open-cell structure ensures optimal drainage, maintaining a stable surface even in damp conditions. ECORASTER thus promotes safe, joint-friendly use for both horse and rider and, in the long term, reduces maintenance and upkeep costs compared to unventilated sand or gravel surfaces.

Especially inside an indoor riding arena, a non-slip surface with good traction is essential for preventing accidents and ensuring a consistent riding experience. The combination of the ECORASTER subbase, gravel infill, and sand surface strikes a balance between comfort, safety, and functionality that meets the needs of both recreational riders and professional users.
